Retirement Gift Ideas, Large and Small

There’s nothing wrong with giving a time piece—a clock or watch—as a retirement gift to acknowledge the time a person gave to a company or institution, but with so many creative minds at work on innovative, sentimental, funny, affordable, and or high-quality retirement gift ideas, we can reach further than the traditional to honor a friend, family member, or co-worker.

Significant, Sentimental Retirement Gift Ideas

The crystal collection, the brass collection, the lasered item, the personalized keepsake all provide thoughtful, meaningful retirement gift gestures for the man or woman who has meant so much to so many.  The date, the place, and his or her name add classic poignancy, too.

Humorous Retirement Gift Ideas

The gag gift, the magazine with the retiree’s face on the cover and a relevant headline, the comic caricature, all have a subtle underlying message that the givers of the retirement gift care, remember, and will always remember the one who put years into a job.  And of course, the humorous gift is great at the retirement party.

Creative Retirement Gift Ideas

One of the newer options for gifting the retiring man or woman is the retirement poem, which can be personalized and etched on a cherry wood box, lasered into a crystal mantle piece, calligraphy penned on fine parchment and framed, or printed onto any number of personal items—on mugs, clothing, favorite hobby implements (like golf equipment), or personal tools and items (like mouse pads or bulletin boards).  Someone who knows the retiree can draft the poem, a group can contribute, or the one buying the retirement gifts can purchase a pre-written poem from an online gift company (though the poem might be more general or generic than intimately woven with specific memories).

Or the crafty person in the office or family can make a lovely retirement gift.  For instance, for as little as $15 (or as much as you want to spend), you can make a beautiful, edible and functional combination gift by making a lollipop bouquet in a fine vase.  With a vase from a department store that can be in the retiree’s favorite color, with a dollar’s worth of green florist’s foam, and with a bag of lollipops that you arrange by poking into the foam in the vase, you can create a gift for a man or a woman who has no real no real needs for anything specific.

As unoriginal as it sounds to hear again, it’s not the retirement gift that matters, though.  It’s the thought behind the gift and the effort you all put into getting and giving it.
